“I’m one member of arts and crafts industry,so I have the responsibility to the promotion of traditional crafts such as the Ningbo inlaid wood carving” Chen Mingwei said in an interview . As a master of arts and crafts and the director of Zilinfang Art Gallery, Chen regarded the Yiwu Cultural Fair as a good opportunity to demonstrate the traditional crafts for the fair’s large scale, high class and great influence .
In the exhibition halls of their art gallery some fine works are displayed such as mahogany furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties’style,inlaid wood furniture and sandal wood carving among which 14 works of over ten million yuan are rarely seen at usual time.
The extra large “Three-Character Scripture of Wang Yinglin”will be exhibited in the cultural fair . It is a classical work of Ningbo inlaid wood which is the Intangible Cultural Heritage in China . Besides, some other inlaid wood stationery will also be exhibited in the cultural fair which has been the presents for Beijing Olympic Games. The“Three-Character Scripture of Wang Yinglin” has a length of 2.52 m,a width of 1.24 m and a height of 0.62 m which was designed and painted by Chen himself . The teaching scene of Wang Yinglin was carved on the front with gardens’features of southern China as the background such as pavilions,terraces,towers and bridges. The 1,086 characters of the Three-Character Scripture and 100 students with various expressions were on the back with overlay .
It is learned that the inlaid wood is the unique traditional craft in Ningbo . It was prosperous in the South Song Dynasty and applied into the furniture in the Ming Dynasty and became a unique one which was called Ningbo-style furniture afterwards .
The old craftsmen often make use of ox stone,fish fin and boxwood to form the pattern and lay into the furniture of mahogany and rose wood.
