Antonio:
Moon cake is a symbol of reunion, sweetness and happiness Antonio is from western Africa and he has lived in Yiwu for over six months. In his eyes, moon cake is a round dessert, which has a strong oriental flavor.
"I have had zongzi (pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves), baozi (steamed bun) and jiaozi (dumpling with meat and vegetable stuffing) in China and nowI knowanother kind of newfood. That is moon cake," he said. Antonio interprets moon cake in an oriental way: The moon cake is round because it expresses beautiful wishes of reunion, sweetness and happiness.
"My interpreter told me that the Mid-Autumn Festival has a history of one thousand years like the Dragon Boat Festival," he said. "It is amazing that a one-thousand-year-old festival is still attractive and the moon cakes convey much significance."
Igor:
Eating moon cake is fashionable Igor,a girl from Ukraine, is a friend of the reporter. Her major was Chinese at university. "When I was a student I had a great interest in the
Mid-autumn Festival and moon cakes in the textbook," she said. "It was fashionable for us to have moon cakes."
She seized an opportunity to be an exchange student in Shanghai in 2010 when she was a junior. "Last year we had a Mid-Autumn Festival evening party at school and I had a moon cake," she said. "At the party, everyone got a moon cake and the flavors w ere different. Mine was coconut. It was sweet and tasty," she added. But she liked the moon cakes with egg yolk best.
"It was really creative and fashionable to make egg yolk as stuffing in the dessert."
